Q. What is your favorite trend right now?
A. My favorite trend is holographic hair that I first saw on a friend's Instagram page. It's such a cool and stunning technique.
Q. What do you love most about the industry?
A. The connections we make. I love that we get to celebrate each person's talent as a stylist, as well as his or her talents and skills outside of the beauty industry. It makes you appreciate each individual even more.
Q. What is the biggest challenge you've faced?
A. I battled cancer about two years ago. It was a huge roller-coaster ride. But it taught me to be more sensitive to people who are ill. And I now realize that just because someone doesn't look ill doesn't mean they don't feel ill on the inside.
Q. What is your favorite cutting technique?
A. I trained at the Vidal Sassoon Academy so I prefer really blunt cuts. However, my clients love texture so I came up with a thinning technique with a carving comb to give them perfect texture. You take the carving side and comb it through the hair—making sure that you've combed the hair straight first. I usually use this on pixies and short men's hair. I find that it works best on someone with medium-to-thick density with smooth or straight hair. The result is a perfect lived-in texture.
Q. What is your favorite color technique?
A. I love applying dual techniques with direct dyes so the client gets multiple looks out of one style. I purposely color block different patterns and sometimes different colors on clients so each time they move their hair, they get a new look. People tend to match things from side to side, but that only gives their clients one look. So how about trying to change it up!
Q. Why are beauty shows important?
A. First off, all of my best friends are people I met at shows. Second, these shows introduce you to the newest products, and you get to see them in action and ask questions! I suggest going to the show with a list of questions to ask the educators so you get your answers from the experts.
Q. What's the best piece of advice you've received?
A. Take care of the people that take care of you. My grandpa was no stranger to tipping 100% when he could afford it. He was super generous to a fault, and he tipped generously to the people who gave him outstanding customer service. They never forgot him, and we had excellent service everywhere we went.
